FAQs

HOW DO WE GET STARTED?

As a first step, you can send me an email, so we can schedule a time to connect by phone.

I’ll ask you what is going on, why you are seeking therapy now, and what would be different in your life if therapy “worked.” I’ll ask a few other questions about your history, share fees and scheduling options, and I’ll answer any of your questions. Our conversation will help us both assess if it makes sense to schedule an initial intake assessment. By the way, there is no fee for the phone consultation.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Our initial intake assessment can occur either in person or via telehealth, and it will typically be an hour long. If we’re a good match, and decide to meet again, we’ll find a mutually agreeable, regular 45-minute time slot to meet each week–or in some cases, every other week. Couples sessions are generally about an hour long.

If we discover that your needs don’t align with my expertise, I help you connect with another provider better suited to support you.

HOW DO I KNOW IF YOU’RE THE RIGHT THERAPIST FOR ME?

When you go on a first date, or you interview a candidate for an open job, you assess whether the person is a good fit. I recommend the same approach when you meet with me or any other therapist.

I recommend asking yourself these questions at the start of the relationship and as it continues:

Do I like this person?
Am I comfortable with this person?
Do I feel judged or accepted?
Am I getting the feedback and the space I need?
Do I feel listened to and understood?

HOW DO YOU ACCEPT PAYMENTS?

You’ll enter your credit card into the secure, online client portal, and your card will be charged at midnight following the day we meet. I will send you the documentation you’ll need to submit to your insurance company if you are eligible to receive partial reimbursement. (More on that next.)

IS THE COST OF THERAPY COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Like most private practitioners in New York City, I don’t accept any insurance directly, but I participate in out-of-network insurance which means you may be eligible for reimbursement for the cost of your psychotherapy. To find out, contact your insurance provider and ask if they offer out-of-network mental health benefits.

If so, follow up with these questions:

Is there a deductible?
If so, what is it, and has it been met by other medical services?
What percentage of behavioral health services will they reimburse for out-of-network providers?
Are there limits on the number of visits per calendar year?

WHAT IF I NEED TO CANCEL A SESSION?

You will need to cancel or reschedule a session at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a full-fee charge. This policy is not meant to be punitive. It allows me to accommodate other clients and to effectively manage my time and schedule. With that said, I will certainly take into consideration medical emergencies or other extenuating circumstances.
